The English Department at Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educación is proud to announce our First Seminar on TEFL Methodology in Chile: Current Trends, to be held on Friday, 3 November, 2017. This is the first time in Chile that a seminar will be focused entirely on TEFL methodology, an aspect of paramount importance for fostering discussion on more up-to-date methodological strategies and techniques. Our main hope for the seminar is that it will take us a step closer to providing English teachers with state-of-the-art resources to enrich their practices in the Chilean EFL classroom.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. B. Kumaravadivelu

Educated at the Universities of Madras in India, Lancaster in England, and Michigan in the USA, Dr. Kumaravadivelu has specialized in language teaching methods, postmethod pedagogy, teacher education, classroom discourse analysis, and teaching culture. He is the author of Language Teacher Education for a Global Society (2012), Cultural Globalization and Language Education (2008), Understanding Language Teaching: From Method to Postmethod (2006), and Beyond Methods: Macrostrategies for Language Teaching (2003). In addition, he has published 30 research papers. He has delivered keynote/plenary addresses in international conferences held in Australia, Brazil, Colombia, England, Finland, Hong Kong, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and USA. He has served on the Editorial Board of reputed journals, including TESOL Quarterly. He has also served the U.S. State Department as an English Language Specialist. Paper and workshop proposals are welcome in the following topic strands:

  • Current Trends in Second Language Acquisition
  • TEFL Methodology and SEN

PROPOSALS

INDIVIDUAL PAPERS: Papers are formal presentations on a contribution of original knowledge by one or more authors within a thirty-minute period, including 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion. Paper presentations will be organised into sessions of 2-3 papers grouped by strand or theme. Presenters will be announced by designated session chairs. No time changes will be allowed even if the previous presenter is absent or has finished early. Each presenter must make sure that they respect their allocated time in order to allow for the other presenters in the session to set up their equipment and start on time.

WORKSHOPS: These 90-minute sessions are intended for participants to put into practice some of the aspects which may or may not have been part of the paper presentations. Workshops will be organised in parallel sessions. Workshop facilitators will be announced by designated session chairs and should indicate need for assistance in the workshop submission form.

PROPOSAL FORMAT

All proposals must be submitted in English in the form that is to be found in this official website.

EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS

Paper proposals will be evaluated by a team of reviewers according to each of the following categories:

  • Appropriateness and significance of the topic/issue/problem
  • Research design if an empirical study, including clearly stated questions, data sources, data collection procedures, and analytic approach
  • Conceptual framework if a conceptual study, including integration of topic into current thinking, clear exposition of treatment of topic and contributions to the literature

Workshop proposals will also be evaluated for each of the following categories:

  • Clarity of objectives and intended outcomes of the session
  • Methods planned to engage participants
  • Appropriateness and significance of the topic
  • Coherence and relation to strands

Please note that if papers and workshops are accepted, the schedule of activity, including the order of presentations, will appear in the seminar programme and must be respected.

PROPOSAL POLICIES

  • A presenter may take on an additional role as a workshop facilitator.
  • Presenters and workshop facilitators who realise that they cannot attend the seminar are asked to withdraw their proposals as soon as possible to give another presenter a place on the programme. If unforeseen circumstances at the last minute dictate that a presenter or workshop facilitator cannot attend the seminar, a substitute will be permitted.
  • The author's confirmation of attendance and presentation signifies that the author will present the paper or workshop on the day and time assigned by the seminar programme committee. The organising committee will not respond to or consider requests for a specific time slot.


The organising committee will begin accepting submissions on 20 June, 2017.
