Congreso Gramática Inglesa

To be held at UNIVERSIDAD METROPOLITANA DE CIENCIAS DE LA EDUCACIÓN

José Pedro Alessandri 774 Santiago de Chile
21st and 22nd August 2014

The aim of the conference is to discuss the current role of grammar in the teaching of English in Chile. Viewed as a means to an end, and not an end in itself, teaching and learning grammar can contribute to the development of communicative competence in English. The rationale of the conference is focussed on the critical analysis of issues such as the extent to which grammar should be taught, whether it should be presented explicitly or implicitly; the kind of grammar that should be taught, to what audience, with what purposes, in what contexts? The conference is an excellent opportunity for teachers, as well as students, for exchanging views and experiences of the teaching-learning process of English with regards to the grammar component.

KEY-NOTE SPEAKERMichael Swan is probably one of the most renowned authorities in the field of ELT and Applied Linguistics. Very few teachers of English can say that they have never consulted one of his works. His major publications include Practical English Usage (2005) and Basic English Usage (1986) (Oxford University Press). His most recent books are Grammar (2005), an introductory book on why languages need grammar and Grammar Scan (2008), a collection of diagnostic language tests. He is also the co-author of How English Works (1997), The Good Grammar Book (2003) and the New Cambridge English Course series (2011).His academic interests include descriptive and theoretical grammar, mother-tongue influence in second language acquisition, and the relationship between applied linguistic theory and language-teaching practice. He has published a number of articles on these topics and given lectures and workshops in many countries. From 2002 to 2008, he was a Visiting Professor at St Mary's University College, Twickenham.
